Yes, but you need to provide more specifics such as disk and partition
configuration, where each is installed, etc. Also you should be posting
this to a Vista newsgroup such as:
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup
Do some searching through the posts in those newsgroups. The issue of dual
booting XP and Vista has been discussed thoroughly many times.

This one has the added twist of the Extended partition for
XP, which I believe to be a non-issue. As I dimly understand
installing XP AFTER Vista, the MBR of the HD controlling
booting has to be repaired for the Vista boot loader. But since
the Vista boot loader can boot XP as well as ntldr can, and ntldr
can boot a Windows OS that resides in an Extended partition,
Vista's boot loader should be capable of booting XP from an
Extended partition, too. Here's a recently posted link to a web
page that describes repairing the MBR for a Vista which had
been installed before XP was installed: http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp

I don't think the Vista boot loader can boot XP. It turns over control to
ntldr which then boots XP. That's why there are two boot menus in a Vista /
XP dual boot configuration, right? The first one is for Vista or the legacy
OS. Choosing Legacy OS goes to the XP boot loader which presents it's menu.
Yes XP's boot files (as MS calls them) can be in a volume on an extended
partition.

OK, that makes sense - Vista's boot loader hands control
over to a previous loader to load previous OSes.
Presumably, then, ntldr uses boot.ini in its old familiar
NT/2K/XP form, and ntldr calls ntdetect.com .

For clarification, MS calls the OS's files that get loaded
the "boot files"? And you're NOT referring to ntldr,
boot.ini, and ntdetect.com as the "boot files"?

Correct.

Yep, MS has it opposite to what you would expect. The partition where
boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntlder are located MS calls the system partition.
Where \windows is located is called the boot partition (volume).
you might download and install VistaBootPro, it works from both Vista and XP and see if it can help you with your boot problem.
it has the options for updating the boot managers.
