Default CPU upgrade - novice question on Socket 775 processors

Hi Everyone

This is probably a real stupid question,.

I have a Dimension 8400 running a socket 775 Pentium 4 540 @ 3.2GHz.

If I were to purchase a Intel E2160 Socket 775 Pentium Dual Core
2x1.8Ghz 800FSB Processor [same socket, same FSB] would I be able to
swap it, and what if any changes to BIOS etc

Thanks

Miraboy

You'll need to check with the motherboard manufacturer (probably Dell
actually) if their motherboard will support that processor.

The chipset needs to be one that can handle it, the bios might need to be
updated, and their front line support, sad to say, probably won't understand
you when you ask those questions.

Not a stupid question, just misplaced, (ie wrong group ;-)).

You need to find out if the Dimension 8400 will support the new processor.
Some motherboards do by a BIOS upgrade.

Just having the same socket type won't be enough.

If you can find out what make and model of motherboard the PC uses, you
would be best to go to that motherboard group and ask, or even check the
manufacturers website.

I'm sure your question has been asked in a hardware forum somewhere.

Not the most appropriate newsgroup for this, but...

Dell has some pretty good online support resources. For example:

http://support.dell.com/support/edoc....htm#wp1052308

Your 8400 has a 925X or 925XE chipset. I believe that does not support the
E2160.

Sorry that I can't be more encouraging.

Return address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.
