In the Control Panel I changed the view to 'category view'. I then opened
'Performance and Maintenance' and then opened 'Adjust visual effects'. I
then ticked the option 'Adjust for best performance' instead of 'Let Windows
choose what's best for my computer' which it had been on. Having done this I
can now no longer see the left hand pane in the Control Panel and so no
longer access 'Performance and Maintenance' to undo any of the above should I
so wish. Please could someone let me know how to recover the left hand pane
in the Control Panel? Thank you in advance.

When you have the Control Panel Open, Click "Tools" then "Folder Options" in
the menu. The very first section on the General Tab has "Show common tasks
in folders" or Use Windows classic folders." Put the dot next to "Show
common tasks in folders", click Apply then Ok. The sidebar should now be
back.
