I have a laptop running XP Home. Lately it has been slowing down more and
more and now I can't seem to click on any desktop icons to run programs.
I've disabled everything in MSCONFIG STARTUP, with no change. My mouse still
moves and I can get the start menu, but no further. Any ideas what to look
for?

- Grab and install WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe.
(Save it to your computer, close all open porgrams, run it from where you
saved it.) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891
- Reboot
You likely have plain old Windows XP - 32 bit... not x64.
Have you checked for interior dust build-up. If the cooling deteriorates
the CPU will overheat and start to throttle until the system comes to a
halt. The mouse pointer will still move even if the system is halted,
because the mouse communicates its movements directly to the video
card without CPU intervention. Just a thought.
