Default Computer browser not in Services list

Hello,

A client couldn't attach to the workgroup so I went on their xp workstation
as an administrator and tried connecting via IP - it couldn't. It could
ping the ip though.

I right clicked on my computer, when to change the name of the workgroup
(I've seen workstations pop out of a workgroup for whatever reason over the
years). The workgroup area was grayed out. I went to services to check
on the computer browser and it wasn't listed. I tried to manually run the
computer browser but that didn't seem to help.

I'm not sure how to fix this short of reformatting the PC.

Thanks

Make sure that there is a network client installed (Client for Microsoft
Networks).
