Default Compressing a 3mb photo

Is there a way to compress a photo from its orgial format to smaller size? I
shoot the most of pictures in a large format for printing but once in a while
I woud like to e-mail them. I know you can reduce the size with outlook under
options but this option is not availble with other mail programs any ideas?

Image Resizer - This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many
image files with a right-click.

As an aside to what the other reponders wrote, one can also use a
graphics editor to resize most every form of picture file:
