Default cmd full screen issue

I'm trying to run cmd in full screen mode (as I'd like to run some of my
old DOS games), but whenever I try a blank screen just comes up. This
even happens when I just run cmd from the start menu and alt-enter-ed
into it. The program is still running fine as I can type stuff in (eg
echo) and the responses are all correct when I return to the windowed
view. What is going on, is it just my computer or does anyone else have
this problem?
I'm running Win XP SP2 with all the updates up to date on an Athalon XP
1700+ with 512MB RAM and I have a GeForce4 Ti 4600 graphics card (should
it be an issue with that).
