My friend whenever he does a force shut down due to some reason on his
computer running windows xp he is prompted to run chkdsk at startup. When he
continues with the chkdsk it hangs at 45% for C drive.
I have tried this step:
1. Click on Start, and the Run.
2. Type "cmd" (Without quotes) and click OK
3. Next type "fsutil dirty query C: and press enter.
4. If the return message indicates that the volume is dirty go to step 5
5. Next type "chkdsk C: /f /x" (without quotes) and press enter.
6. After that finshes repeat step 3.
7. If it is no longer dirty then reboot and you should not face CHKDSK
hanging at 45%.
But it stillhangs at 45%
Other wise system works fine.
Please help,
Thanks in advance
If he's doin forced shutdowns and checkdisk is hanging I wouldn't say the
system is working fine otherwise. Often chkdsk hangs because of an issue on
the drive causing it to choke. This may be a portent of things to come.
Backup files first.
Determine the make of your harddrive and get the free diag online supplied
by all vendors. Test your harddrive using the quick option. If it comes back
ok do the full scan option.

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.
Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.
