Changing audio volume causes a beep

Hi newsgroup.

There is an annoyance with XP, that I noticed already years ago.. but
I never decided to to something about it. Until now.

OK: when you change the volume level (with sndvol32.exe) of the
general channel (not wave, sw-synthesizer etc. but the one the far
left), it will cause a "beep" of the system speaker. Of course,
everything works ok, and I noticed that not only on this PC, it seems
to be by design.

That behavior never occured with earlier windows versions.

So, how to turn that beep off? It's very distracting.

That beep is supposed to be a wav sound, to give you an indication of your
volume level. Go to Control Panel/Sounds and look at "Default Beep." You
probably have no sound assigned to it, or a sound that no longer exists.
This will cause the system speaker to beep instead.
