cannot access folders and icons in the desktop

hi, gud day,

my laptop just gone bad, if i click the icons and folders (like my computer
& my docs) excluding icons of programs and files in the desktop the desktop
icons including the task bar will disappear for a second and then the
reappear without opening the one that i click, i tried to explore the start
menu but to no avail and also the control panel.

the OS is XP Pro

pls. help me.
