Default Can't log on after running RegFix.

In trying to solve another problem I ran RegFix 6.2 and allowed it to 'fix'
several problems. This, naturally, created a bigger problem in that I can
now no longer log on to Windows.

When I turn on the computer I get a box that says "Please wait..." at the
top with the Windows XP Professional logo in the bottom.

Then I get a box that asks me to, "Log on to Windows." My name, the name of
the computer, is in the Name box and then there is a place to type in a
password. I have never given Windows a password that I need to get the OS
going so I leave it blank and click "OK". This results in a little box with
a red circle with a white "X" in it.

What's next? Re-install OS. Re-format hard drive. Toss in dumpster?

Obviously sending this via another computer.

Hello Randy

Try logging on as the built-in Administrator. When you see the box
asking you to log on, type Administrator in the name field and leave the
password blank unless you have assigned a password to the account (it's
blank by default). If that gets you in, then go to User Accounts and
remove the password on your usual account. Also look to see if your reg
cleaner has an "undo" function. If it doesn't, you might want to run a
System Restore.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to try a password reset utility. This
is a good one:

Note: The default password for the built in Windows Administrator account is
normally blank (none).

For XP Home users:
Boot the computer into Safe Mode
Do this by pressing the F8 key after the Power On Self Test is finished,
until the Start menu appears.
This will get you to the correct menu window.
Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account
and any other accounts.
(Note: Accounts are displayed alphabetically).
Use the Up/down arrow keys to highlight the 'Adminstrator' account;
Remember as mentioned above: The default password is a blank (no password
required).

For XP Pro users:
You do not need to go into Safe Mode.
At the Welcome Screen, do/press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys twice to display the
Windows logon box.
Type in "Administrator" (without the quotes) and 'if' you assigned a
password when you set up Windows, then enter it. (Note: by default the
password is blank, no password need be entered)

Once your in, then:
Click Start/Run/and type in: Control Userpasswords2 and then press OK
Next click on the Advanced tab and then click Manage Passwords.

The registry contains between 8,000 and 12,000 lines of data,
sometimes more. Each line has some specific information
about the hardware or software on your machine. A registry
"fixer" would need to know exactly what each line means in
order to "fix" something. This is obviously an impossible task,
which is why people are always discouraged from using
registry fixer when asking about them in this newsgroup.
The most recent post ("6 ways to speed up Windows")
appeared here just 15 hours ago.

If your problem is just a password problem then booting the
machine with a Nordahl boot disk will let you reset the
password. You can get it from here:

Sadly, this is all too often the normal result of using any automated
registry "cleaner."

The first thing to attempt would be to restore your original registry.
Try the steps listed here (Hopefully, Regfix didn't also destroy the
default backup registry files that WinXP creates automatically):

If that doesn't work because Regfix also damaged the backup registry
files, try a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) repair installation:

Only after the two methods above fail would I consider a clean
installation of the OS and applications.

I am a proponent of
registry cleaners as
Microsoft is too with
their OneCare System.

However, I have not
heard of the one you
used and can't seem
to find the website
for it.

So it is unknown to
me if that software is
a rogue software disguised
as a registry fixer or maybe
it is a beta or maybe it
is incompatible with
your version of windows.

But if it is a quality
product then it should
have created a restore
point or backup'd your
registry before fixing
whatever it found corrupted.

So you may want to look
for the instructions under
it's help option.

Naturally.

It's too late now, but for the future, I strongly suggest you avoid
using any registry cleaning program. Cleaning of the registry isn't
needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and don't use any
registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and what vendors of
registry cleaning software try to convince you of, having unused
registry entries doesn't really hurt
you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

See if your registry cleaner comes with an undo option. If so you can
try booting to safe mode and running it.

If that fails, you can try doing a repair installation of Windows, but
my guess is that that won't help you either. You probably will have to
reformat and reinstall Windows cleanly.

I don't get to the Welcome screen when I turn on the computer. I get the
screens described in my original post.

Typing Administrator into the box I do get and clicking okay gives me the
same result as stated in the OP.

one of the above.... and
still there doesn't seem
to be a homepage for your
version.

i think the predominant
problem I see is that there
seems to be an idea that
the software key has been
cracked, thus it makes it
a lure to unsuspecting
downloaders.

i would forego the system
restore and do a windows repair
installation with your windows
cd....

just some fyi - stick with
reputable software developers
like Microsoft OneCare, et al.

Try booting into Safe Mode.

To start Windows XP in Safe Mode turn on the computer and start
tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon as the first information of
any kind shows on the screen. Keep tapping until the Windows XP
Startup Menu appears and choose Safe Mode from the menu.

Try logging in to your own account and to the default Administrator
account. This account has a blank password unless you have
specifically created one for it.

If you can get the computer started in Safe Mode then use System
Restore to set it back to the most recent restore point that is prior
to your runnig RegFix.
