Blackout screens on Media Player 11 on XP 64

Hello, All.

For the past month or so, I have had this almost random blackout
screen when I played avi files. Sounds were on. One strange thing is
that occasionally this did not happen... Any ideas ?

Run DXDiag and see if it complains of uncertified drivers; try lowering
graphics hardware acceleration, etc.. Also look at the computer
manufacturer site and the graphics card manufacturer site for updated
drivers.

Try lowering graphics hardware acceleration slide. You can lower
graphics hardware acceleration in Display Properties, Settings tab,
Advanced button, Troubleshooting tab. If this helps, you probably need
a different graphics card or drivers.

I had not run DXDiag and as far as I could tell, there were no
errors.

I am using Quadro FX1500, upgraded to the latest driver when it became
available, and I did change the acceleration from full to one or two
increments, but it seemed that I did not lower the acceleration level
enough This time I lowered the level even below the half point,
but there are still many files that do not show images...

Yet, I am still not clear why this problem started happening. There
had been no problems more than a year...

Maybe there was a Windows update for the graphics card driver. If you
have WU set to automatically download and install all updates, that
could be the cause. In that case, if you open Device Manager and revert
to the earlier drivers, it could help. That may not be the case; it's
just a thought on why it would suddenly stop working.

It could be an update in Flash, jscript, or Java, I suppose.

Thank you all the suggestions.

I reinstalled the version of the drivers that came with my box, then
installed the latest drivers available from NVIDIA.
Then, when I made dual display setup to start, so far all the movie
files became playable even when the hardware acceleration was set to
be fullest. During a few reboots with dual display setup, screens
flickered a bit, but now everything appears to be stable...
