i am getting (windows root)system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt please
reinstall the file. i have a compaq S3100NX with XP pro that came with no
recovery disks or other such disks. i made a 6 cd recovery kit while the
system was still working. i can no longer get anywhere on the comp. it stops
at that screen with the above error and then nothing. freezes indefinitely.
any thoughts or suggestions as to how to fix? i have read about needing the
XP disk, but i don't have anything like that. i really don't want to have to
go out and purchase a new copy just to get to the recovery set up. somebody
help me.....please.
How did you create the recovery disks? Recovery usually begins with booting
a CD/DVD - did you try booting from the first CD (May require the last CD
first)?
Usually the term "missing" a *.dll file does not mean it is not on the
conputer - usual problem is that the System partition is not seen during
boot.
Repair is generally possible with the XP CD - borrowing a CD may provide
accesss to the Recovery Console (first repair option) and give the
opportunity to correct the problem - but the second repair option for a
current Windows installation will require a product key.
Check the recovery disks and look for a folder titled "i386" (XP) - if there
is look for a setup file - you may "luck" out.

Two points:
1. OEM vendors are required by their agreement with Microsoft to give
you a means of reinstalling, should it be necessary. They can do this
in one of three ways:
a. An OEM copy of Windows
b. A restore CD
c. A hidden partition on your drive, with restore information.
If you don't have a or b, you should have c, but you should contact
your vendor to find out.
2. Personally, I find both b and c unacceptable (especially c; a hard
drive crash can leave you with nothing), and would never choose to buy
a computer that came with an operating system unless I at least got a
complete generic installation CD for that operating system.

See the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
You can make a bootable CD using Bart's PE Builder from http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and that should allow you to carry out
the procedures described in the article.
Good luck

If you can see your hard drive booting from CD.
Here is the good Booting CD knoppix http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/
Download CD image and boot from CD using different PC.
you might be able to fix hal.dll
It should read NTFS, USB drives, all kind of drives.
Good luck.

I can't answer that question, but if I were in your shoes, I would
contact your vendor and ask them. They might provide another CD,
either free or for a low price.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

i have another comp system with xp pro on it, again without xp or recovery
cd's.
is there a way to connect the bad hard drive and swap the necessary info to
it? in other words, pull the HD from the compaq and put it in my working comp
and fix that way? thanks for the continued help!!

I was going to suggest checking at http://www.restoredisks.com thinking
you could be able to get a install cd, or recovery cd there.
Make: Compaq Model: Presario Series: S3100NX doesn't show there as listed.
Your PC most likely has a restore partition on it and probably didn't ship
with any CDs. When you see the Compaq splash screen is there a Press
F(number) for setup showing on screen??
