Anytime I try to add a program, such as "fax", I get a message saying it
cannot find one of the fx files. The files are in c:\i386, but when I point
the computer to that file, it cannot find them. Even when I put my restore
XP sp2 disc in and point the computer to i386 on the disc, it cannot find
them ? what is the problem ?? thanks

Maybe whoever made your "restore" disc didn't include it. Try using a
real copy of XP.

It's a CD that Dell created and, yeah, it's real but not a retail or
generic OEM type real and Dell may have decided that you don't need the
fax feature. It's obviously not "real" enough to do the job :-)
That said, your only recourse is to call Dell for support because
Microsoft will not support real restore CDs from Dell.

Let me know what Dell says after your geek friend calls them :-)
he deleted and reloaded the modem software and then I was able to install
the fax program from the add/delete windows components. Nice to have folks
willing to help rather than being cynical.
