Default 2 lines in lower bar

I have Win XP Home.
The lower bar on the screen, the one that contains the Start button on the
left and the clock on the right, is 2 lines (rows) high. I know how to pull
it up to 3 and 4 lines high and back down. But I cannot get it to go below
2 lines high.
I can put the mouse pointer on the top edge and get the arrows and pull the
arrows down. Nothing happens until the arrows get to the bottom. Then the
entire bar disappears. Reversing this brings the 2 line bar back.
How can I get that bar down to 1 line? Thanks for your time. Otto

You might have multiple bars of some kind, e.g. multiple Language
Bars. Right-click any blank area of the Task Bar, then left-click
Toolbars. Now left-click the various bars until no ticks are left and
see if this fixes the problem.

What happens is that the end "margin" of the QuickLaunch toolbar has
gotten so far over to the right that it is now down below. Unlock the
Taskbar and then "grab" the dotted line on the bottom bar and drag it up
to immediately to the right of the QuickLaunch icons. Now you've
successfully made the QuickLaunch toolbar shorter and can "grab" the top
bar of the Taskbar and "push" it down to the regular one-tier height.

Make sure the bar is unlocked. Look closely and you'll see 2
Vertical separator lines. That vertical separator can control the
total space ( Height ) of the bar by extending the space to take
up two or more lines. Repositioning the Vertical Separator bars
to take up less space will allow the height to be a single line.
