Default Xp won't set up

I have a pc which had windows 98 installed. I think it also had a
partition with restore information on. I have tried to install windows
xp. I reformatted the hard drive, deleting all previous partitions,
but when it boots up it says "searching for boot record for ide-0. ok"
then hangs. I tried reinstalling several times but with the same
result.
I removed the hard drive and put it in another pc and it set up ok,
put it back in original pc and it still won't boot into xp.
Any ideas.
Thanks
