Either uninstall SP2 or slipstream SP2 into the upgrade CD and it should
work fine.

Default Re: XP Pro Upgrade

My question is in regards to XP Pro Home OEM install to XP Pro retail. I
inserted the disk and this is the message I received,

"Windows cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD.

Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is
currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be
recovered."

This is interesting because the upgrade box I have (for XP Pro) says this on
page 2 of the "Start Here" manual:

"Quick Upgrade"

.... You can upgrade to Windows XP if all the following are true:

You're already using a previous version of Windows that supports upgrading:
.....
Windows XP Home Edition
NOTE: I do NOT want to implement a NEW installation, I want to upgrade!

Help please

Did you read the post you hijacked to post your question?

You are trying to upgrade your currently functioning Windows XP Home
installation (doesn't matter that it is OEM, retail, etc.) to Windows XP
Professional using a retail CD according to you. You get the message
"Windows cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD." You have quoted that verbatim (meaning
you culd have done a google search on it) and then used someone elses post
to ask your question, ignoring what was in the post that answered your
question of why you are getting that message.

You are getting that message because you have Windows XP Home Edition
installed and it is upgraded to SP2 and beyond. The CD you have (Windows XP
Professional Retail) obviously does not have SP2 integrated into it.
Therefore - you are trying to upgrade Windows XP Home SP2 with Windows XP
Professional PRE-SP2. You need to either integrate SP2 into the CD and burn
a new CD or you can uninstall SP2, upgrade, install SP2 again. You will
have better results if you integrate and burn a new CD.

Google for "integrate SP2 into Windows XP CD". You should find several
tools that will all but do this for you. You will need a CD writer in order
to complete the process.
