Default XP doesn't boot up

I have installed AVG's Anti Rootkit program. I rebooted the computer and now
XP doesn't boot. The BIOS sees the hard disk drive. I can manually select the
hard drive to boot from but it simply shows a black blank screen. I don't
know what to do next. Can anyone suggest some things to try?

F8 during boot may take you into Safe Mode i.e.
allow access to startup files on the HD.

Press F8 while booting, and choose (Safe Mode). Then when Windows starts,
remove the Antivirus u have installed.

Default RE: XP doesn't boot up

I have worked out how to get into safe mode.
I have done the following things so far:
1) Bootcfg tool, from the Recovery Console to repair the boot.ini file
2) Fix a corrupt boot partition sector using fixboot [drive]
3) Fix a currupt master boot record using Fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0
4) Perform an in-place upgrade
5) I have also run a hard disk utility and it passes that.

I am still having the same problem.
I have noticed though when I boot the PC in safe mode it gets to the
following line:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system 32\DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS
