WP won't boot up except in safe mode

I need help.
I have been using XP Sp2 for the last 3 years with no problem until I
decided to change from Mcafee to AVG for my virus scanner and fire wall.
I unstalled Mcafee and installed AVG, but the new firewall was not working.
I decided to unstall AVG to try again and on completion I rebooted the
system, got as far as the XP logo but never got to the log in screen. Tried
rebooting to last known good config. by no luck it just hung between the XP
logo and the log in screen. Went into safe node and tried system restore to 4
days previous but no luck there. Reinstalled XP and everything was ok until I
went to windows update and had 80 critical updates started to install but
they failed to initialize. went to shutdown with 74 updates to install but
these did not install. restarted the system but XP will not boot up except in
safe mode.
What can I do next?
Any help would be appricated.

To All who may have similar problems
I "solved" my problem. Disconnected all peripherals except screen, mouse &
keyboard. Rebooted and all worked fine. Windows update ran and updated the
system. AVG installed with no problem. Reconnected the peripherals and
everything was fine.
