Unwanted duplicate icons

Have recently reinstalled XP Home and find that if I save an icon or a file
to the desktop, an additional icon is created in the Quick Launch toolbar.

If I delete an icon on the desktop, it deletes the one in the QL toolbar and
vice versa.
