Default Unable to activate re-installation of genuine WinXP

I just finished re-installing my copy of WinXP. After logging in as
Administrator, I get a message about activating my copy. After pressing
"Yes", the system logs me off (the same when I press "No"). What is
happening?

Also, I can't use Safe Mode to activate, as it can only be done in Normal
mode. During the installation process I had to enter the serial number,
which I did. WHY ON EARTH CAN'T I ACTIVATE IT THEN? I'm totally locked out
of Windows!
