Default Is there a way to use a desktop with a laptop's screen?

I have a new Dell computer but with no monitor. I also have a laptop.

Dear cfman,

First thing that comes to mind is that you could user XP's remote desktop to
connect to the Dell.
You need to network both machines via something - crossover cable/plug them
both into your DSL router etc.....

Is the Dell is Vista, then you won't get Aero on the NB screen only Vista
Basic ARGB. So it would not play games very well! :-)

Hope that helps!
(You are gona get a screen later on for the Dell right?)

screen? Thanks

Google "laptop as 2nd monitor' and you will get lots of hits on how to do this.
But I suspect you will at least need a monitor on your Dell computer to setup.

Dear cfman,

You will need to borrow a screen for the Dell to see what is going on. If
this is a home network - set up home networking with the Wizard in Control
Panel / Networks.
Read up on Remote Desktop.
You can then use the Dell with your notebook (Start / Accessories / Remote
Desktop Connection).

You can pick up a cheap 17" monitor for the Dell <$50

suppose my new PC is not registered with our network administrator, and thus
it's not able to connect to the Internet if I directly hook it to the
network;

and suppose now I buy a Linksys (wireless)router, and my Linksys router is
able to connect to the Internet because somehow the administor has already
been reported about the existence of such a Linksys router, and I've
previously connect my laptop to the Internet both directly and via the
router(since my Laptop is registered with the administrator)...

Will I be able to connect the new PC to the Internet through the router?

Thanx

Hi cfman,

Probably not. You are going to need the help of your administrator.

Or find a clued up networking person that can help you set up ICS on the
Notebook and allocate an IP for the Dell that will allow the Dell to use
your notebook as a gateway.
Its complicated... Depends on what your enterprise network is.

I don't know how many $ per hour you value your time, but I would think
purchasing a cheap monitor for your desktop, as a previous poster has
suggested, would be the most cost-effective way to solve the problem.
