Default Is there a way of determine xp license type from install key?

Hi All,

I need to reinstall xp on a toshiba laptop that has been formatted. It has a
COA label on the bottom, so assumed oem but my generic OEM xp home or OEM pro
install disks will not work with the key.

I'm pretty sure it is a genuine coa label as has the hologram type effect on
it but it doesn't say what license type or xp version it is.

Question therefore - is there any way to tell what type of license/version
this is from the install key? is there a program that will determine this for
me or will Microsoft be able to tell me?

Cheers,
Al.

Not that I am aware of.
It's pretty likely it's OEM, so if a home or pro OEM cd doesn't work, Only
one left is Media Center.

The name of the version is on the COA.

Look closely at the sticker and it will say.
It has to be one of three, Windows XP Home, Professional or Media
Center.

since you are probably not the original owner, contact them for the
appropriate media.
Even if you have the correct version, you may still have problems with
the incorrect media.

You could also try Toshiba, but if it is an older laptop out of
warranty or you are not the original owner, they may not help.

You may have to purchase Windows XP if that is what you want
installed.

Not necessarily, I've seen a few COA stickers without the version on them.

Hmmm. Interesting. I have never seen COA's without the Windows version
stamped on it.

I've just tried a xp media center oem disk but that didn't work either. I'm
fixing it for a guy who has had it from new from toshiba (bought in 2004 so
well out of warranty) and the toshiba website has the o/s line blank under a
warranty check.
He has a driver disk that says 'windows xp' on it but only contains drivers
rather than o/s installation stuff. (he doesnt have a clue as to what version
was installed)

The oem label definately doesnt say which version it is, just the product
key and a small code. Think i'll try and give MS a call.

Cheers for your help though guys.

Not many, but I've seen it once or twice.

spoke to ms, gave them the product key and they advised it was a xp home oem.
Tried again with my disk and it worked - obviously typed it wrong earlier!
Doh!
