Default Sysprep and subnets?

It appears that sysprep (XP, 2003) no longer works under VMWare if a virtual
machine is moved to a different subnet than the domain controllers.

If I put the virtual machine in the same subnet as the DC's, the domain-join
function of sysprep works. If I put the machine in a different subnet it
does not, and I can't find errors anywhere. The DHCP scopes for both subnets
have the same options for DNS, suffixes, etc.

Is there an issue with subnets and sysprep?
