But further reading will reveal that you cannot install SP3 onto a
system running Gold, it requires at least SP1.
That said, it may still be possible to slipstream SP3 into a Gold CD. I
have heard anecdotal evidence that it may work, but I've not seen
anything definitive either way.

To update an exisitng install to SP3 it must be version SP1a, minimum.
