Default repair install: can't find file(s)?

Running xp pro, sp2. Due to some networking problems, I'm trying to do
a 'repair install', per http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315341. Each
attempt fails, with a message ...
" An error occurred copying file XXX.sys to c:\$win_nt$~BT\XXX.sys
The file is missing. "

Files 'XXX' listed so far are:
azlq4mld.sys, aovnlxea.sys, a8xkmk64.sys, anxluupf.sys, almnct2p.sys

Any clues would be appreciated.

Background and details:
xp is running mostly OK, but is having problems on my LAN. In looking
into these, when I open <network connections - properties>, it takes
about two MINUTES for the dialog to come up. It takes as much time
again to open the 'advanced' tab. When that does finally open, it just
shows the message ...

" Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The
Windows Management Instrument (WMI) might be corrupted. "

Pursuing this, the WMImgmt service is indeed stopped, even though it's
set for 'auto'. When I try to start it manually, it gives the error ...

" Could not start [WMI] service ... error 126: specified module
not found "

Stuff like that. I didn't get anywhere pursuing the WMI stuff, nor with
the WBEM issues that WMIdiag hinted at. So, I thought I'd try a 'repair
install'. Since my CD was pre-sp2, I did this per ...

(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871/) ...
" How to integrate Windows XP Service Pack 2 files into the
Windows XP installation folder "

.... and ran winnt32 from the folder that created on my c: drive. This
started up OK, but got the error described in the 1st paragraph before
it could finish.

Again, and clues about any of this would be appreciated.

Thanks,
George
