Default recording mp3

Is there any built in or fee software downloads that allow you to
record mp3 files?

The built in sound recorder allows you to record wav files but they
are too short.

If i could find a way to record then I could convert to mp3 with my
itunes. I want to read/record some study notes onto cds.

I have a microphone and a cd/dvd recorder.

Thanks for any advice.
