moving licence from one PC to another

Hi,

I have a retail version on Windows XP installed on a computer. I am
building a new computer and want to re-install that same version.

How do i move the licence over to the new pc?

i was thinking that unless i do something with microsoft, they will think
that its been installed on two computers.

- Remove Windows XP from the first computer.
- Install Windows XP onto the new computer.
- Activate Windows XP on the new computer.
(May have to choose to activate by telephone.)
- Continue living your life as normal.

Thanks for getting back to me,

I cannot uninstall from the old machine as its hard drive became courrupted
and had to be reformatted.

Will what you suggest still work without having uninstalled? Does windows
notify MS during the uninstall process?

In this case - uninstall is equivalent to smashing the hard disk drive with
a hammer or formatting it and not installing Windows XP back onto it if it
was 'formatted' without doing so. Just so it is not installed currently on
the old machine.

Microsoft - truthfully - likely doesn't even know you installed it initially
anymore. They do not keep some huge database sitting around fully populated
with all WIndows systems - no matter what the conspiracy theorists would
like you to believe. It just wouldn't benefit anyone to have something like
that nor would it be practical.

If the old installation has died, simply install on new sys.
You may or may not have to use phone activation, if so simply stateing the
old sys is dead/scrapped is sufficient

I read somewhere that if the new system differs to the old system (i.e. 2
hard disks rather than 1, and the size of the new hard disk is different to
