Joining to a Domain!!

I am having a really intereting problem which I have not encountered before
so I am hoping you guys can help.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 laptop. This is currently in a workgroup and I
need to join it to our domain.

Connected it to our netwrok and booted. Picked up an IP address from our
DHCP server and all the DNS and router settings as it should.

Tried to join it to the domain but it returns an error to say it can not see
a Domain Controller. Clicking on Details lists the ldap query and the
correct list of DC's in our domain!! So it CAN see the DC's as the ldap
query has returned them!

I can ping the DC's by IP address but not by NetBios names. I have upgraded
the network card drive to the latest drvier and still get the same problem.

It's got me!!

Anyone any idea what this is?

Checked the Advanced Network Settings - make sure that underneath
connections - the connection you are getting said IP address with is listed
first. (If it is a Local Area Connection - make sure
Wireless/1394/Bluetooth are not listed above said connection in the
ordering.)

Once you have put the connection first - try again.

I have checked the advanced settings but there are no other connections
listed.

This is still confusing me!

To ensure we are on the same page...

Start button --> RUN --> ncpa.cpl --> OK
The "Network Connections" window should open.
From the top menu (File, Edit, View) choose "Advanced" --> "Advanced
Settings..."
The "Advanced Settings" window should open.
You should have the "Adapters and Bindings" tab selected.
It is the top area (Connections that I am referring to.

I would be surprised if it did not have either 1394 or wirelees in there
somewhere (as a laptop.)
Of course it could have been configured that way (or just older.)

Is your domain listed in the domain suffic search order?

Hi,

Thanks again for the reply.

I have followed your instructions and sure enough there was the wireless
adapter at the top of the list even though it was disabled. I have now moved
this down so that the Local Area connection is at the top.

Re-booted and I still get the same message stating that a DC could not be
contacted, even though the DCdiag txt file lists all the correct DC's for the
Domain.

Also the domin is listed in the DNS suffix search order.

If I do an Ipconfig /all every setting is 100% correct. DHCP servers, IP
address, Router, WINS servers etc.

This is very strange. I really have not come across this before.

Is DHCP giving you the domain controller as the DNS server, or an Internet
router as the DNS server?

If the latter you will be able to browse but not join the domain.

BTW, think carefully before joining a laptop to a domain, as it will lose
all of its existing settings. Do you really need/want to do this, or do you
just want to access shares on the server?

DHCP is doing everything correctly.

We have joined many Laptops and PC's to the domain recently as we are doing
a migration but this one Laptop is giving us a real headache.

When you enter the domain name, enter the FQDN of the domain.

i.e. mysubdomain.mydomain.com
