I did install XP Pro many times on an old PC. That PC started up from
XP CD drive and installation was straight forward. Now on this PC, it
started Windows first, then I had to use Windows Explorer to open CD
drive. Because the CD XP version is older than the existing XP
vresion, the installation can not be continued.
Exactly, how can I strat up my PC from XP Installation CD, to install
XP from CD drive even the XP version is older? I tried F8, F12,
Delete button immediately after turn on the PC. The PC just started
the existing Windows XP.
You need to change the BIOS to boot from the CD drive before the hard drive,
you've provided us no info on the PC, but common keys to enter BIOS setup
are Delete, F1, F2, F10

Thanks. I don't have the Laptop with me now; it is a Dell Inspiron.
Can you
describe in details how to change the BIOS to boot the Laptop from the
CD drive?
As I said I tried clicking Delete key before; but Windows XP still
opened. When
or how soon should I press Delete, F1, F2, or F10 key? What to do
after that?
Actually, with a Dell, watch the screen during initial startup, in the upper
right of the screen it should prompt you to hit F12 to select a temporary
boot order, or to enter BIOS setup and permanently change it use F2.

when you get into the bios you will see tabs across the top. one of them
when selected will open a screen that will have the boot sequence option on
it. click on that and you will see various options usually by hitting the
page up and page down keys, some use the arrow keys, find the one that says
boot from CD and make it the default. F10 usually saves and exits. when
you are finished with the install, go back in, and set the c drive as the
default. that will speed up getting to the desktop.
