Hibernation and Standby Don't Exist

I had a system problem and the consensus was to do a full reinstall of
Windows XP Home on my Dell D610 Latitude.

I did so. During setup my disk was repartitioned, reformatted and a full
version of XP Home was installed. I have updated it etc. Unfortunately, the
tab that would allow for enabling hibernation is not there nor is it possible
to put the computer into standby.

All of these things were possible prior to the huge system problem I had
that required the reinstall.

Dell could not help other than suggesting I re-install again.

Any help would be appreciated.

After you reinstalled XP, did you go to Dell's support site and
download the latest drivers for your laptop's hardware? If not,
flip your laptop over and look for a sticker with a bar code
and a seven digit service tag. Enter the service tag at this
web site to download the latest drivers.

Hibernation and Standby missing indicates that you need to
update the driver for your video adapter.

You have to install _ALL DRIVERS_ for your system first, to get Standby
and Hibernate working. Look in control panel -> device manager, if there
are any ? left. These are (currently unusable) devices which need a
driver to work. After that, perhaps you have to enable Hibernation by
hand, this can be done in control panel -> power management.
