Default hardware upgrade and XP

i built a new machine and installed my old HDD into it and proptly it
wouldn't boot and, after a few attempts, it trashed the FAT and the machine
wouldn't even see the drive after POST. it whiped out al traces of an OS
ever being on there and jumbled my data something fierce. so,, how do i
migrate my HDD into a new body without trashing the HDD?? i sued to do this
on a regular bassis with 98 but it's a WHOLE different story with XP
PS. i was upgrading all my units and it proceded to whipe out 4 HDDs. data
recovery sucks!!!

Default RE: hardware upgrade and XP

jse,

I'm not sure I fully understand the problem but from what I could gather, I
recommend the following:

Using a full version of XP or upgrade with a legal copy of 98, ME, or 2000;
boot up the pc and enter the BIOS. Change the boot up priority to CD_ROM and
install XP from the disk. The formatting should happen for you
automatically. If you are trying to salvage data, use the old HDs as slaves
in the new machine. XP can read disks formatted in FAT32.

When you move an installed Windows XP to a different motherboard you
need to do a Repair Install of the Windows XP. A Repair Install will
preserve your installed applications, user data files, and
configuration settings. See

Good luck
