Default Font problems since installing SP3

Hi

Since i've installed SP3 the font "Arial Black" only displays in italics. I
have checked the windows fonts folder and everything looks to be ok, altho
"Arial Black" is a "O" OpenType font and "Arial Black Italic" is a "TT"
TrueType font.

No matter what program i use, when i select "Arial Black" as my font it
displays it in Italics no matter what options i select for it.

I may have this problem with other fonts also but i haven't checked yet.

Any help appreciated.

Default RE: Font problems since installing SP3

Hello,

I have the same problem, but at the moment it is only affecting Word Art.
Same as you I am stuck with italics only on arial black fonts. I installed
SP3 on 9th May.

As I use it within my website I am concerned how it may appear to other
users with SP3.

I have posted the problem in the Windows Update forum.

Please can you post a thread here if you find a solution. I am considering
uninstalling SP3 ?

Thanks.

I have the same problem. The main headline font on our internal company web
site displays as Arial Black Italic after our test group upgraded today to
SP3. The headlines appeared in Arial Black before the upgrade. This could be
a show-stopper for upgrading the rest of our 1,000 or so users, unfortunately.

Similar problem but a bit different here. Running SP3 in a VMWare
session, in notepad Arial Black is bold, Arial Black Italic is bold
italic. Haven't yet looked at any other fonts, or any other
applications.

Regards,

Dave

Default RE: Font problems since installing SP3

We have done some research and have found that a Microsoft hotfix released in
2007 changed the Arial Black and Impact fonts. The hotfix is described here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892598/

We suspect that this hotfix, which was included in SP3 along with many other
hotfixes released since SP2, installs much newer versions of the fonts. They
are somehow no longer working the same in XP, but we're not sure why.

Interestingly, they display fine in Vista, so we suspect the fonts that were
tweaked for the hotfix and installed in SP3 are the same as the later
versions used in Vista as well.

When we reinstalled the older version of Arial (v2.35), the font displayed
correctly again.

Hope this helps.

So when is this going to be fixed? It's very disappointing that I found this
after printing 2400 invoices this month.

I had a similar problem. I had installed Office 2007 without problem, and
subsequently applied XP SP3. After the SP3 install, various dialog boxes in
all Office2007 apps behaved weirdly with obvious and ugly font substitutions
taking place, for instance in the text on buttons.

Following the thread here about Arial, I examined my windows Fonts folder
and noted that about 5 other fonts including Tahoma and MS Sans Serif had
been updated in the SP. I removed the new fonts (in Safe Mode, XP does not
permit in normal mode) and used the old files from the
/windows/$NtServicePackUninstall$ folder to replace them.

So far, things seem returned to normal in regard to these fonts bahaviour in
dialog boxes.

No need for hotfixes

The main thing to do is check whether the extensions are correct for your
fonts.
Go into Control Panel>Fonts, which opens the font folder. Click properties
for any fonts and make sure the file name has a .TTF (capital matters)
extension. For me, all my Arial fonts were Arial Italics, because the Arial
extension got changed into .ttf, lower case. So, the next font that it looked
at was Italic. Once I changed the .ttf into .TTF, everything was normal again.

Thanks for your reply. The great majority of my fonts are lower case .ttf
extensions. I am unable to rename them. The only way that I can see to
even try is to go to properties for each one and modify the extension. But
when I close the properties, the old lower case is still there.
