original CD. Someone got the bright idea to call it by the same name
"slipstreaming," without realizing that the name was originally used

The term stuck. I dislike the use of the word this way, but the
original meaning has been lost, so I long ago gave up trying to fight
it. Since everybody now uses it simply to mean a version with the
upgrade incorporated in it, I reluctantly go along.
So these days a slipstreamed copy of XP simply means an installation
CD that you've made yourself that incorporates an upgrade, such as
SP3.
I suspect your predictions will come to pass. As an Accountant I would
have been chewing up the marketting people for the cost of issuing so
many free SP2 CDs. It may have been a good PR exercise but it was an
expensive one.

That free distribution was in the fall of 2004, and was done by mail order
only. The really expensive free distribution was done in Feb 2004. It
was a security update which included SP1a and all subsequent updates
to the late fall of 2003. It was distributed by mail, and by the millions
to
be available at computer and software outlets. Places like BestBuy and
Staples had boxes of them at the checkouts. This was to address security
issues compounded by the fact that many XP users had not installed SP1
or any security updates. It was sort of like a mass innoculation.
It's a pretty safe prediction considering the fact that Microsoft is charging
around $10 for the Vista SP1 DVD here in the US. Kind of bad PR to charge for
the Vista SP1 DVD and give away an XP SP3 CD.

Nevertheless it must have been a very expensive exercise. Of course XP
Microsoft was getting a very bad press at the time over the collossal
number of security vulnerabilities built into the operating system.
