I tried logging in to the Security/Admin site, but couldn’t get a window in
which to post.
Problem: Quite suddenly, my Windows Firewall has gone away!. When I try to
look at its settings I get a message whether I want to start up the Windows
Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service? When I click on “Yes” I
get a message that “Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) service.
Dies anyone know what’s going on and how I can correct it?

At Start run services.msc. Scroll down to Windows Firewall/..., It should
normally show as Started and Automatic. If it's stopped, try to restart it.
If it won't start, check that the Network Connections, and Windows
Management Instrumentation services are running. If they are both
running, you may have a problem with svchost.exe, possibly an infection.
Windows Firewall shows automatic but not started. When I try to start it I
get a message: "Coulf not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Sharing
......." "Error 2: The system cannot fingd the file specified"
I don't know if the file in question is svchost.exe, but I have three
instances if it. One in c:\WINDOWS\$NTServicePack\Uninstall$. The second in
C:\WINDOWS|system 32 and the third in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePack\I386. If this is
the file it is looking for, should I have a copy somewhere else and if so
could I copy one in from either another PC or from one of the sites above?

Both files referred to in the article - ipnathlp.dll and ipnat.sys - are
where they are supposed to be. Also, the article refers to a servicepack 2
computer and I am on servicepack 3. Would this make a difference?

Thanks, Ramesh, but I just now resolved another problem involving the Wise
Installation Wizard and having done so I rebooted and then for some reason
checked the firewall, to find it was up and running. Maybe the other problem
somehow interfered with it and maybe it just fixed itself, but for now all is
well. I appreciate your trouble.
