Default Setup requires Windows 98 compatibility to run

Good afternoon. I'm new to this forum, seems like a good spot to learn.

Here's my situation. Both my desktop and laptop are XP SP2. I have noticed
on occasion that installers will crash on my desktop but not my laptop. In
order to get the installer to run, I have to set the compatibility mode to
Windows 98. I recently ran a program update on my desktop that faulted,
telling me that it was not an XP machine, which it is. I strongly suspect
these problems are related.

I have System Mechanic which tells me the registry is fine - I have my
doubts.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.
