settings not sticking

after every reboot the recycle bin icon is on the opposite side of the
screen. tried all settings on right click desktop icons to no avail.
sometimes the touchpad icon is missing and have to reload driver to
get it back. using a toshiba laptop a105 windows xp.
is there a file missing or a virus?

Icon positioning aside, if you're not 100% sure you don't have a virus, then
you need to get to that place. Do you have an up to date anti-virus program
installed? Have you run a complete scan with it? How about protection from
other malware?

yes have ran checks for viruses and have not found any. virus
protection is always up to date

Then you've tried:

Right click any blank area on desktop:
-- Choose Arrange Icons By
-- and removed the check marks from Autoarrange and Arrange to
Grid?

If so:
-- is your Antivirus (AV) updated?
-- Same for spyware/malware detectors?
What are the *names* of the *AV* and *spyware* detectors you used? Were
they updated before use?
Did any of them find anything at all?

One updated AV prog is fine, but you need 3 or more spyware/malware
detectors; no single one catches everything the others do. That's why I
asked for names of those apps.

If your listing of programs is deemed OK, then you might want to get
hijackThis. Be sure to read its paperwork: Do NOT post a log here!
Only to the groups/sites that say to send it to.

If that fails, then consider a Repair Install but be sure to back up
your important data first. Actually, that should be done, regardless,
especially if you've never backed up or haven't done so in a long time.
