My XP Pro installs my VAIO ext USB HDD with no problems. It all shows up in
both USB and Hard drives sections of Device Manager. All the drivers are
there as per usual. The problem is "My Computer" and "Explorer" is not
picking it up at all. It all works fine on other computers, seems like a
software error but can't put my finger on it. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks.

The new hard drive cannot appear in Windows Explorer or My
Computer, nor can disk management assign it a drive letter, until it has
been partitioned and formatted. Right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk
Management. Create and format partition(s) on the external hard drive
as desired.
Re: My Computer and Explorer not picking up USB Drive
Thanks Bruce
The drive is formatted. Working fine on other computers as described. Also
it doesn't show up in Disk Management.

Re: My Computer and Explorer not picking up USB Drive
I have now sorted it. I had it going through a 4 way USB port. I unplugged
the port and plugged into the dock direct and it worked immediately. Thanks
for ideas though.

Re: My Computer and Explorer not picking up USB Drive
Bruce,
Havenlad's real problem is that the computer did not work with the USB hub.
I have a simliar issue. My Dell 4700 will recognize a USB flash drive and
other components (USB Keyborad, mouse, web cam, printer) but will not
recognize a hub or a multi flash card reader/writer. The reader is P&P but
shows a yellow ? under Other Devices in the Device manager. It does not show
up in Explorer as a drive. On installation I get asked if I want to find a
driver. No driver is needed. I can't find an answer to this problem.
The reader is new and USB 2.0 and i have one 2.0 Intel 2.0 controller shown
in USB. There is a 128MB SD card in the reader (also new). Thanks for any
ideas.
