Default Lost Volume Icon

My system is XP Pro SP2, fully updated. The computer was 6 years old
last week and other than this problem is still working the way it should
AFAIK. I hope this is the correct NG.

About 2 weeks ago I lost the Volume Control icon from the system tray
where it's been for the past 5+ years. I have no clue why and I've
found no way to retrieve it permanently.

I've gone to Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices > Volume tab. The
checkbox for "place volume icon on task bar" is checked. I uncheck it,
click on "apply," re-check it, click on "okay" and the icon is back in
my system tray. But when I reboot, it's gone again.

The same thing has happened to my anti-virus icon. The AV program seems
to be working, but the icon is gone. I'm not asking for help with the AV
icon. I'm just hoping someone will be able to give me a clue about the
Volume icon and maybe, just maybe, that solution will also solve the
problem of the AV icon. If not, I'll go to the forum page for the AV
program.

Any information will be very much appreciated.

Terry

Hi there...
First:
Try right-clicking on the taskbar and click properties. Uncheck 'Hide
Inactive Icons' apply and ok. See if this brings the volume control icon
back.

Some good reading and suggestions here:

Sorry. That didn't work either. In fact, the checkbox was not checked
in the first place.

I've just started reading the winhlp site. Maybe I'll find something
there.

Thanks very much.

Hello Terry,

Try this:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Click on the letter "V" at the top and scroll down to "Volume
Control".

Thanks for the information. I think I've got enough research to do to
keep me busy for a while. If this doesn't work and I need more help,
I'll come back again.

Thanks.

Terry
