I'm working on a Computer Club's lap top computer. Window XP Home. It had
the following problems.
1. Couldn't connect to the internet.
Checking the status of the Local Area connection on the Support tab, the
status reads:
"You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources.
This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address
to the computer."
To restart the connection and try to establish full connectivity, click
Repair. I did and the Repair responds with "Windows could not finish
repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:
Renewing your IP Address."
2. McAfee had never been activated. Would not open.
3. From a USB Flash drive I installed AVG Anti-virus, couldn't update and
removed 58 infected files, primarily Trojan horse downloaders.
4. From the flash drive I installed Ad-Aware SE Personal, couldn't update
and removed 243 spyware and related stuff.
5. From the flash drive I installed AVG Anti-Spyware, couldn't update and
removed additional 58 spyware stuff.
6. Since the LAN connection work on my other computer, I thought maybe the
on-board connection may be bad so I inserted a LAN connection device. Same
problem connecting to the internet.
7. Installed Belarc Advisor and discovered that there were no hotfixes ever
applied. None.
8. Using HiJackThis I removed several "nasties."

If you are really sure that the computer is now completely
malware/virus-free, repair the winsock. You don't mention whether or not
you have SP2 (I certainly hope you do), so here are instructions for
both SP2 and pre-SP2:
If SP2 is installed, Start>Run>cmd [enter]
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]

I can't be sure that the system is malware free. I can't update AVG or any
of the other malware programs. If I was sure that it was clean, I would
install SP2.
Gum tree and paddle springs to mind.
I dont suppose you have win2k cd to start from scratch with a known clean
sys?

A couple of items in response; 1) Over the past 7 years of "house call"
volunteering, I have yet to give up and reinstall, and 2) I have SP2 on my
USB Flash Memory.
I do want to connect long enough to update the AVG and Ad-Aware for a final
scan before installing SP2 and the remaining 70+ critical updates since
then.

Then you need to make sure the computer is clean or nuke it and start
over, whichever is preferable to you. In order to properly clean that
machine, you need to have all antivirus and antimalware tools and
updates on a flash drive or cd-r. Here are instructions:
1. Clean machine
2. Install SP2
3. Test and if winsock is still damaged, do the repair command I already
gave you.
I see from another post from you that you are doing "housecall
volunteering" and you don't do clean installs. This is naturally your
choice but it isn't the most efficient and effective way to handle a
badly infected computer. I'm not being critical mind you, just
suggesting that 1) taking the machine into the shop (or home with you)
might be a better choice; 2) or backing up the machine and wiping it
might be a better use of time. Please understand that I'm approaching
the problem from the point of view of someone who does this for a living
and spending 12 hours trying to de-infest a machine that may still never
work right isn't practical for either me or the client. In any case,
