Default IE7 dead as a dodo (long winded but please help ifyou can)

I have a bit of a problem i had windows update set to auto-update for
a while and while downloading the computer crashed during a download.
After an indeterminate time (Days) I managed to get the computer up
and running everything works except ie7and a problem with incredimail
xe, when ie7 loads it will just sit there will not connect to
anything just dead I have tried everything i could think of regarding
my zone alarm pro/avast antivirus allowed everything then disallowed
everything disabled them/turned them on and
off and no help at all I have managed to get mozilla firefox up and
running and cannot log back in to microsoft download every time i try
the computer tries to startup ie7 even if its not the preferred
browser firefox cannot log in because microsoft isn't a trusted site?
and to top thing off incredimail blocks everything in a message so i
get virtually a blank page with hundreds of boxes with a little icon
in the top left hand corner and it doesn't matter what the add/popups
url setting are it wont let hardly anything through.
=====
now what i think happened is a file or two (part of win xp got dropped
lost whatever during the crash now what would happen if i reinstalled
xp over the existing xp I remember years ago with win 95 it was smart
enough to know which files were missing and only reinstalled the
missing files or updated out of date files would this work with xp/sp2
or would i be getting into more trouble i'm looking for an easy way as
I don't want to have to backup a 260 gig drive before wiping
everything and doing a format/reinstall any offers of info of help
greatly appreciated.

oh and i have tried every combination of setting in tools/internet
options.
TIA
Silver

Excuse this subtle hint: have you tried Mozilla
Firefox?
