Running XP Pro SP2, IE6, OE6 with all current updates. I have not install
anything but Windows Updates in the past two weeks and now when click a link
in OE6 it opens a blank page in IE. The hourglass icon stays about 15
seconds and the returns OE and the email link I click. It never opens the
website of the link I clicked. If I click the 'X' to shut down IE it opens
another IE blank page. This will continue as long as I try shutting IE down
with the 'X'. None of the windows will close without opening the Task
Manager and using the 'End Task" button which sometimes takes three to four
tries. Was there an update that was released that would cause this problem?
If so which one? If not does anyone have a solution to fix this problem?
IE will open normally if I click the shortcut icon.

1. Open Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types tab
2. Select "URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol" and click Advanced button
3. Select open and click Edit button
4. In "Application used to perform action" field, type:
"Path to iexplore.exe" "%1"
e.g. -
"c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" "%1"
5. Uncheck "Use DDE" and click OK twice.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for "URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy"

Adding to Ayush good advice and after trying it do the following if your
problem still persist:
Click Start >> Control panel >> Add/Remove programs >> Set Programs access
and Default >> Make sure that IE is the default browser.
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced .
Click on programs Tab and make sure the check box for:
[ ] Let Internet Explorer check if it is the default browser is checked.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
How to manage Add-Ons: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256
Open a run command and type in:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll click [OK] and Reboot your machine, any progress?.

Thanks for reply Ayush and nass. I did check everything and all was as
suggested. When I registered the urlmon.dll file as suggest by MVP Frank
Saunders, and nass that fixed the problem.
Thanks again
