How to create an association in the Folder Options control panel
Hello,
When I am in my Outlook Express and receive an email with a pps and
when I want to open that pps, a message appears saying
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control
panel"
I have no problem opening that pps when I am on my Provider (aol, in
my case) and use its email service.
So, please let me know how I can open that same pps on my Outlook
Express .

There are four ways to create file associations:
1. Using the folder options tab in Windows Explorer
2. Using the folder options tab in Control Panel
3. By right clicking on the file and selecting "Open With"
4. By editing the registry.
OE is not in that list; hence you must proceed with one of the four methods.
Help & Support has detailed instructions for doing one
of the first three. You will need the free Power Point Viewer from MS or
Power Point itself to be able to see power point presentations.
As for why you can see them when you are viewing them from your provider,
the reason is that someone at you ISP has enabled use
of the Power Point Viewer (on their system) with files with the pps
extension.

Way #3 does not work with me as that icon does not lead to "Open
With". If it did ,I would not have asked for your help.
Can you PLEASE explain your Way#2 .(Way #2 is also mentioned in the
warning I received.See above,)

Do you have Power Point installed on your machine?
No?
Go to MS and download the Power Point viewer and install it.
Now try to view the .pps from your email.
No?
Save the .pps attachment to your desktop and double click on it to run.

Ways 1 and 2 are fundamentally the same.
To execute way #2:
Open the control panel
Click the folder options icon
Select "file types"
You associate file extensions with a program in the resulting view.
It may be that you should have installed the Power Point Viewer before
starting this process. You won't be able to view pps files without either
Power Point or Power Point Viewer regardless of what XP believes about the
file associations. And, the installation of either program would most
likely have fixed the associations. The failure of Way #3 is most likely
caused by neither program existing on your computer.
