How can I sort a folder so that sub folders are in date order?
I want to sort the My Pictures folder so that the sub folders are in true
date order. At present I have a situation where the sub folders are in
alpha numeric such that the folders are listed as follows e.g
Re: How can I sort a folder so that sub folders are in date order?
How about naming the folders
List by Name,
2007_01_01
2007_02_02
2007_03_10
2007_04_05
2007_11_25
etc.
I have year (2005 2006 etc) folders with files named this way with spaces
instead of underscores.
But use caution when doing a file search by name to ensure the correct year.

Re: How can I sort a folder so that sub folders are in date order?
Don,
Adobe Lightroom is the program I use to import photos. It does allow the
date format you suggested but unfortunately it does not allow spaces so the
dates look like:
20070101
20070202
20070310
20070405
20071125
> etc.
I find the lack of spaces slows down quick finding of a folder hence my
chosing the format using the month as text name.
I guess I have no choice but to do as you suggest however this is a Windows
sort problem not Adobe Lightroom. As many Microsoft programs can sort on a
date with the month as text, e.g. Excel, Word and Access.

Can you separate with underscores? i.e., _

Re: How can I sort a folder so that sub folders are in date order?
Don,
The format is applied by Adobe Lightroom at the time of importing. I would
need to change every folder manually but to me it appears that although the
folder lookes like a date it actually is treated by windows sort as a text
string.

Re: How can I sort a folder so that sub folders are in date order?
I assume you cannot sort using the date created. Have you also used "View |
Choose Details" to see if there is a column that can be used for sorting?
If none of those are possibilities, then it would be easy enough for a
person familiar with doing scripts to write one to rename files in a
directory. Perhaps you know someone that can help you with that. It is
probably a good task to use to learn about scripts.
