Frequent copying of large number of folders & files

I asked this over in the xpmusic group also but thought I might improve my
chances by putting it here as well.

I regularly copy my music files to a second internal hard drive and also to a
removable Lacie. The exercise consists of a folder with a hundred or so sub
folders containing 9,000+mp3 files. Is there any way to copy only those
files which aren't already on the two backup drives? Or do I just have to
wear the 90 minutes it takes for each one to copy each file?

Synchronization software... There are many of these.

One Microsoft put out was SyncToy...

The utility free from www.xxcopy.com has this function.

I really like Second Copy backup from www.centered.com ($29.95) which will
do exactly what you want and much more. I don't work for them but I've used
their program for clients for many years with great results.

Recently, a tech friend of mine told me about a program called SyncBack five
stars which he heard was excellent and free, but I haven't used it yet so
YMMV.

Possible solutions:
- xcopy with flags
- xxcopy (not part of XP)
- Briefcase
- backup or ntbackup
- Copy-clear archive; next time, copy only those with archive set, clear
again after copy, etc.. Sort of Attrib to get archives together in the
list.

And so on, depending on what fits you best. Briefcase or backups work
the best & easiest IMO.

So does the built in xcopy. ;-)

(/D could be used to only copy files that are newer than the destination's
file if it exists - if it doesn't exist, it *is* newer)

Totalcommander can do this.
Once you try Totalcommander, you'll ditch MS explorer and never look back.
