Default Dvd player not playing dvds

I have done a clean install and am running good except that my dvd player is
not reading dvds. I have realplayer version 11 and windows media player 9 I
do not have any preinstall player lost it on the clean install. Have
downloaded nero 8 to see if my drivers and codecs are up to date and they are
and it states that my internal cd rom is dvd read capable and that my
external is a dvd drive read and burner. Got any ideas as to why they are not
recognizing dvds.

You NEED to install drivers from the DVD reader's manufacturer to use
the region decryption necessary to play nearly all retail DVD movies and
DVD TV programs. Any "clean" reinstall of the OS will require
reinstallation of the reader's drivers. If you don't have a CD try the
drive manufacturer's web site for a download.

driveragent and ran the driver update program and it siad my drivers are up
to date i have downloaded a media player codecs pack from microsoft yet this
has not helped, I have a older laptop that i can try the drive on but am
unsure if it will recognize it it is a toshiba sattelite and it has win98se

Codecs is what you should have been referred to - not drivers.

See if you cannot locate your copy of WinDVD or PowerDVD (one of those
likely came with the system) or if not - find a freeware DVD player/codec.
www.videohelp.com might be of some assistance.

Does your DVD player software recognize when there is a DVD disk in the
reader?

If you use Windows Explorer to view the DVD disks can you see the
listing of the folders and files on them? If so, at least the laser used
to read the DVD is apparently working.

When you double click the DVD readers in the Device Manager do they have
a "DVD Region" tab in the "... Properties" pop up?

I've read reports of DVD readers having problems with their lasers that
prevent DVD operation but still allow CD operations, but since two
players ceased to function at the same time I'm suspecting some element
of the software that came with the DVD reader(s) or the associate
Windows registry entries is missing or corrupt. If that is the case I am
not aware of what can be done beyond reinstalling the DVD drive
manufacturer's software.

Paul
The realplayer and the wmp show both drives have no disc in them and i put
one in both. I pulled the external apart and cleaned it out with air and
cleaned the eye with a eye cleaner and still nothing. they will read cdr and
cdrw and store bought cd-roms now so that is good the only thing i have not
tried is burning. if that works it will be a blessing. I guess i will just do
with out the dvd part for now and move on.
Thank for all your help with this.
