Hi I am having problems trying to burn to Dvd Drive.. I have lost the sendto
Dvd drive command, and when I try to drag the dvd drive to the send to
folder, it immediately changes to CD.. When I use software like deep burner
and nero to burn to dvd, I am getting a calibration error.. Is my DVD Drive
going out? Any help appreciated .. thanks Rainy
XP can't natively burn DVD's. Vista can burn DVD's directly - which O/S are
you using? This is the XP basics group, not Vista. Perhaps try the
Hardware group (or general) Vista group?
In XP you'll need Nero or similar to burn files to DVD.

and even mentioned
using Nero in my post and getting a calibration error.. this is the first
time I have had any problems.. If you look at the bottom of my post I

Note the word "natively" in Andrew's sentence "XP can't natively burn
DVD's." He doesn't mean that XP can't burn DVDs if you install DVD
burning software. He means that XP doesn't come with any DVD burning
facility, and he's right.
Of course you can do it, if you install third-party DVD-burning
software such as Nero (a good choice, by the way).

I also tried with a program called Deep Burner.. which I have never had
problems burning before.. it's also giving the same error.. I hope it's not

The reason the name of the drive changes from DVD to CD when you add
to the Send To menu is, as mentioned, that XP doesn't write natively
to DVD's, so the name is changed just remind you.
For the calibration error, is this a "power Calibration Error"? If so,
read this from Nero Support:
I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full'
error message. Why?
Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.
Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test
to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called
"Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do
this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is
called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by
programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD
for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up
to 999 times.
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration
area is (almost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor
media, poor power, or a defective recorder.
Please try the following solutions:
Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's
website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power
with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error
occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis
could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the
external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary
IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary
IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service.

respond in a better way.. No it was just a calibration error, no power that
I can remember.I just went online to see what firmware was.. and will update
it to see if this makes a difference. and get back with you.. I am sharing
power .. which I need to correct with everything that is connected to my
computer.. one large power surge protector and one outlet.. but have done
this for years without any problem I think.. but will look at finding a
solution for this as this isn't the first time someone mentioned this to me.
Some of what you have suggested is unfamiliar to me.. but will try what I am

could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the
external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary
IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary
IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service.
