Disconnecting

My Internet connection is dropping out every so often. The connection icon
is still on the task bar and the phone is 'hissing' (so connected) but I
can't do anything. the connection window will not open....it sort of flicks
on and then off....and there is no colour to the two small Monitor windows
in the icon. I have to completely reboot.
I have noticed it seems ok if I turn my newly installed Brother Printer off.
Surely that isn't causing it to happen???? Any help please

Try turning the printer off a couple of times , then unplug the
printer and see what happens . If nothing does , it`s the printer . (
Might be installed incorrectly - is it compatible ? )

Just suggestions but if it seems to work properly when the printer is
turned off then you should investigate that avenue further. If the
printer has fax capability it could be that auto-answer features or
other settings are interfering with your line.

Thanks for your help but no luck so far. I get the following message:
"Generic Host process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"
Now this screen is sitting at this moment ontop of this message. If I click
on "Don't Send" I know my internet connection will shut down and I won't be
able to do anything but reboot the system.

Inclined to agree that the printer is suspicious. Couple of points:

Is it a USB printer, and are you using a USB modem? If so the combined
current-draw may be too much for the mobo. If so I'd ditch the USB modem and
get an Ethernet router. Far more reliable.

Do you have microfilters on ALL phone devices? (except the ADSL modem on
which one is optional) The fact that the phone hisses suggests that it's not
properly filtered.

If the printer is a MFU, does it have a fax connection to the line? I've
known these to cause interference to ADSL even when filtered. The answer in
that case is a double filter, or taking the fax lead a few turns around a
large ferrite ring may also help.

I have the printer turned off most times....wouldn't that take it out of the
equation? Also I am only 56 dialup and use an internal modem on com3 (which
for some reason this time, after the reformat, it went to com7) I forced it
back to com3 as that is what the jumpers are set to on the board. I have
read a heap of stuff on google about this Generic Host thing and they all
say maleware but I have used lots of programs and there is non there, well
they say so, so shouldn't be that. Still catching up with updates for XP as
the original disk is a bit old. Maybe when they have all been installed
things may improve. Thanks for your suggestions

Probably speaking too soon here but have installed update KB894391 last
night before closing and have been on here now for just under an hour and no
problem. This update was recommended by Microsoft for this Generic Host
problem. Have my arms, fingers and legs crossed
