connection to server fails

Hello again I have been having trouble updating programs on my computer for
example pc-cillin internet security program won't update or even scan, I
cannot update lavasoft ad-aware or any other program that needs to connect to
their server. I have no problems connecting to internet explorer but have
problem downloading some programs for example spyware utilities won't
download normally I have to use alternative ways. Please help I don't know
what to do I have Xp home edition. It was suggested before in the forum to
uninstall norton program but I don't have norton on my PC
