I attempted a clean re-install of XP Professional. When the installation was
complete, I couldn't access the Internet, nor would the computer allow me to
adjust the monitor resolution. Also, I was unable to see my external USB
harddrive which has all my Ghost recovery files! I am using the disks that
came with the Dimension 2400 system from Dell.
I know that I don't have a hardware problem because, out of frustration, I
wiped the disk and installed Ubuntu 7.10 and it works perfectly.

Did you receive a Resources CD with your Dell? If so, you can use it to install
the correct drivers for your system. If you don't have the CD, go to this web
site and enter the code printed on the Service Tag attached to the back of your
computer.
If you can't find the Service Tag, click on Select Model.
In the right hand column, make the appropriate selections to arrive at the list
of available drivers for your Dimension 2400.
At the very least, you want to install the correct driver for Chipset, Audio,
Video, and Network.
If after installing drivers, you're still having problems using the hardware
devices in your computer go to Start -> Run and enter devmgmt.msc in the Open
box. Any entries with a yellow exclamation point next to them will have to be
addressed.
